What I Wish I’d Known : Spinal Cord Injury Day
Today is Spinal Cord Injury Day, and as someone who has lived with a spinal injury for nearly 20 years, I wanted to share a little of my story.
When I was 19, I had a quad bike accident that left my spine severely damaged and me permanently disabled. In an instant, the life I thought I’d have was completely changed. Looking back now, there are so many things I wish I’d known in those early days - lessons I had to learn the hard way, and that I hope might help someone else who is just beginning their journey.
Recovery isn’t a straight line
Some days will feel impossible, and others will surprise you in the best way. Both are okay. Healing is never smooth, and that’s normal.
You’re allowed to grieve
I spent too long trying to be “positive” all the time. The truth is, you’re allowed to feel sad and angry about what you’ve lost. Giving yourself that space is part of moving forward.
Your body will adapt in incredible ways
It might not work the way it used to, but it’s still strong, capable, and yours. I learned to see my body not as broken, but as different — and still worthy of love.
People will surprise you
You’ll lose friends, and that hurts. But you’ll also discover who really matters. The best people glow in the darkness and stay by your side through everything.
The right tools change everything
I learned the hard way that not all mobility aids are built for long-term comfort. That’s what eventually led me to start Cool Crutches with my mum — because no one should have to put up with pain, discomfort, or embarrassment just to move through the world.
My message to anyone adjusting to a spinal injury
You’re stronger than you think. Even on the hardest days, keep going. And on the wobbly days, come back to this reminder: you are not alone.
