Winter Essentials for Disabled People: Must-Have Products & Mobility Aid Accessories
Winter is pretty much here, and with it comes chilly mornings, unpredictable weather, leaves under your feet and icy pavements, all of which can make getting around a little trickier. Whether you use crutches or a walking stick, staying warm, stable, and visible is key to keeping your confidence (and balance!) this season.
Our co-founder Amelia, who’s been living with a spinal injury for over 20 years, knows first-hand how important it is to have the right tools for winter mobility. From comfort-boosting upgrades to must-have accessories for safety, these are her 2025 winter essentials for anyone who doesn't want the winter to beat them!

❄️ Heated Blanket
When the temperature drops, few things beat wrapping up in a heated blanket. Perfect for home, hospital stays, or sofa naps (no judgement here), they’re an instant source of comfort and warmth.
Amelia’s favourite pick is the Beurer Heated Bordic Blanket. It's soft, plush, and even great unplugged if heating isn’t allowed. It’s ideal for keeping muscles relaxed, easing pain flare-ups, and staying toasty through long winter evenings.
❄️ High Performance Ferrules
Winter walking surfaces can be unpredictable, but good ferrules make all the difference. Our Cool Crutches High Performance Ferrules and Ultralite High Performance Ferrules provide unbeatable grip on wet, icy, or uneven ground for your walking stick or crutches.
Made from ultra-durable rubber with a built-in flexible shock absorber, they help reduce vibration, improve traction, and keep your mobility aids stable no matter the weather.
Amelia’s tip: If your ferrules are tricky to remove, soak them in hot water for 10 minutes first, it makes swapping them over much easier!

❄️ Mobility Aid Torch
Dark winter days and mobility aids don’t mix well, which is why our Cool Crutches Torch is an absolute game-changer. Designed to clip directly onto your crutch or walking stick, or any other mobility aid (it doesn't have to be one of ours), it lights the way hands-free, making morning school runs, evening dog walks, and everything in between much easier.
It’s a small gadget that makes a big difference when visibility is low.
❄️ Thermals
Thermals are a must-have for layering during winter. I personally struggle the most with cold legs and feet and do rely on thermals in winter to keep me defrosted! I recommend looking for tops and bottoms that fit snugly under clothing, allowing for easy movement whilst keeping you toasty. You choose options with flat seams to avoid irritation, especially for those who may have sensitive skin.
If you're looking for cheap and cheerful, then Uniqlo are a great brand, but if your budget stretches a little further, then M&S also have a Heatgen range which I love!
❄️ Extra-Wide Cuffs
If you use crutches and love a thick winter coat (or five layers of knitwear), our extra wide cuffs are an absolute must. Designed for maximum movement and comfort, they give you 5cm of extra room around your arms and sleeves, so you can wrap up without feeling restricted.
❄️ Soft Grips
Cold weather and joint pain are never a fun combo, which is why we created Soft-Grip Handles and I promise you, they make all the difference for comfort at this time of year. Whether you use crutches or a walking stick, these padded grips reduce hand pressure and stop that numb, achy feeling that can come with winter use.
Perfect for those with arthritis, nerve damage, or just hands that get super cold like mine! Once you try them, you’ll never want to go without.

❄️ Radar Key
This is one of those simple things you don’t realise you need until you really need it. A Radar Key grants you access to over 9,000 locked accessible toilets across the UK, a lifesaver during Christmas shopping or a trip out to the Panto.
Compact and easy to carry, it removes one of the biggest sources of stress when you’re out and about: finding an accessible loo, fast.
❄️ Glow In The Dark Stick!
Saving the best until last, this is my favourite addition to this year's winter survival check list. Winter days can be dull, but your mobility aids don’t have to be! Our Glow-in-the-Dark design is perfect for staying visible and safe when the days are shorter, darker and more miserable. The subtle glow adds extra visibility for drivers and pedestrians, while also making it easier to find your aids in dimly lit spaces, whether that’s by your bedside, under a restaurant table, or at a winter market!
They’re not just practical, they look seriously cool too, and are available for both walking sticks and crutches.
Winter shouldn’t stop you from getting out, enjoying festive fun, or feeling confident with your mobility aids. The right tools, from soft grips and strong ferrules to reliable warmth and lighting, can make all the difference.
