Standard crutch handles, including most NHS-issued ones, are hard plastic or rubber with minimal padding. They're functional for short term use. For anything beyond a few days, they become uncomfortable, and for people with conditions affecting their hands, wrists, or joints, they can be genuinely painful from the start.

Neoprene is soft, durable, and absorbs the impact and vibration that travels up through the crutch shaft with every step. How often should you replace a ferrule? If you're using crutches daily for weight bearing, check them every six to eight weeks. If the tread pattern is significantly reduced, replace them. They are inexpensive and the cost-benefit calculation is not a complicated one.
Standard replacement ferrules are suitable for most everyday use on pavements, indoor floors, and moderate outdoor surfaces.
